Playing the guitar is tactile, and to improve it, you need to practice. And you need to know your objective as you practice it. Of course, talent is essential, and it will give you a head start but, if you want to get better, you have to work harder.
Set yourself a goal as you practice, and do not stop until you achieve that goal.
Pick a song and set yourself the goal to play that song perfectly. Memorize the music entirely and play it by heart. When you achieve that goal, select another, and then another. Daily practices to accomplish the plans will help you improve, and you will build proficiency slowly. You need to practice daily. Repetition is the key to mastery. You need to channel your muscles, mind, and hands into playing as your brain shall be utterly devoid of the process. You need to dedicate yourself to playing and practicing for years without giving up.
I will give you another tip: you need to practice without headphones and standing up. Why? Because you need to hear your guitar through the amp. And stand up, because you can’t feel the groove as you are sitting.
You need to learn every chord with all the versions. When somebody says play the “C” chord, you should think at least ten versions of it, and you should be at a level to play all of them without thinking. When you know your chords, you’ll be a valuable guitarist, a musician.
Move your hands as you play, because that will give you softer or sharper sound. You need to know exactly what sound you will get as you move your hand around the neck. As you go down the bridge, you will get a sharper sound, and when you go up the neck, the sound will get softer, so use that mobility as you play.
Your pick is more important than you think. The style and the condition are significant, and it can affect your playing. Try as many picks as possible as you practice. Find the pick type that will suit your playing and rotate the picks from time to time because you will change as you practice. Your pick choice is as essential as your guitar choice.
Another thing is to keep an eye on the metronome. You need to keep up with the music or are worthless; you can play the guitar like Jimmy Hendrix, but you are weak when you miss a beat. You shall feel the pulse of the metronome and play in harmony.
And the last thing that I can advise is to be confident. To believe in yourself, to be cool. Not just in music, you need to be aware of your job and trust in urself and your ability to do it. If you believe in yourself, you can push yourself. When you push yourself to work hard, you will see the progress you make and keep working; that is the kind of a loop you should be in.
The tips mentioned above are the recommendations that I can give you it play better.
